Whistler, located a couple of
hours' drive north of Vancouver, in the province of British
Columbia on the west coast of North America, is Canada's leading
holiday destination and you'd be hard-pressed to find a better
place in the world for mountain holidays!
Did you know that Whistler has
a rich history?
Although the first record of
European activity in the area dates back to the 1860's when
the area was surveyed by British naval officers, the Coast
Salish people have inhabited the area for thousands of years.
Did you know that Whistler Mountain's
first name was London Mountain?
Early in the 1900's, Myrtle
and Alex Phillip founded a back-country fishing lodge, called
Rainbow Lodge, at Alta Lake.
In 1914, the railway came to
Alta Lake, and made what used to be an arduous two-day trek
on horseback from Squamish accessible to more visitors.
By the 1950's more lodges had
appeared, and summer visitors started to show an interest
in the area as a winter destination.
In the mid-60's, the road from
the coast through to Whistler and Pemberton was pushed through.
It was single-lane all the way, and the trip from Vancouver
took 5-6 hours!
Garibaldi Whistler Mountain
was born in 1965, boasting a four-person gondola, a double
chairlift and two t-bars!
Whistler is now a world class
destination for both winter and summer vacations!
Skiing and other snow-related
pursuits are available from late November through to late
May.
And five championship golf courses
combine with high quality mountain biking, and a myriad of
other summer activities, to keep you busy from May through
October!
